Let reading color your world: Kids summer reading kicks off June 1

By Children’s Librarian Shelley Harris

Friends, can you believe summer is almost here? It feels like winter was just last month and also a full year ago! But the calendar does not lie: our summer reading program, Reading Colors Your World, starts next week on June 1!

Kids, like adults, have been doing their best this year. It’s time to give ourselves a little bit of a break and find some joy.

That’s what this year’s goal is: joy. Find joy in books. In your mind and body. In art. In music. In science. In nature, and the world around you.

Watch the videos below—available in English, español, and français—for an overview of this year’s kids summer reading program and keep reading for more details!

We have over 120 activities in six different categories. Kids ages 3 and up who finish at least five activities in one category get a pouch of beads. Finish five activities in all six categories and get a super special bead. Read for 10 or 20 hours and get more beads! (Reading is part of the six categories, too.)

You can pick up beads at the Main Library or Maze Branch Library, have them delivered in Oak Park, or mailed out of town.

We’re tracking reading through Beanstack again, so if you joined us last year, you will use the same login information. You can use the website or download the Beanstack app on iOS and Android.

Everyone is welcome to join us, whether you live in Oak Park, Michigan, Florida, France, or even Antarctica. Library cards are not required.

As always, our kids who have not yet started kindergarten can join 1000 Books Before Kindergarten on Beanstack! That’s right: preschoolers 3 and older can do both programs until they start kindergarten.

Track how many books you and your child read together, watch a special celebratory video after every 100, and earn special prizes when you finish 300, 700, and 1,000 books together.

We can’t wait to find our joy this summer. Please join us!
